In May 2016, the Pegnitz Staedtepartnerschaftsverein hosted a twinning event in Pegnitz bringing together people from Guyancourt, Slany, Linlithgow and Pegnitz. The theme of the weekend was Migration and Integration in Europe.
The event took place from Thursday 5th May to Sunday 8th May. Over 70 people travelled from Guyancourt by coach and 12 from Slany. Rod & Fiona Aird together with Allan and Linda Macleod travelled from Linlithgow.
On Friday 6th May we were taken to the beautiful town of Regensburg where we were given a guided tour.
On Saturday 7th May we attended an exhibition and panel discussion about Migration and Integration in Europe. On the panel were an MEP, Uwe Raab the Mayor, a representative of a refugee support organisation and a representative from the Youth Welfare Office. We also had the opportunity to meet some refugees who were now living in German villages. The morning was extremely well organised and thought provoking.
In the evening over 200 people met in the Wiesweiherhalle for a meal and entertainment. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening meeting old friends and making new friends.
On Sunday, we had the opportunity to attend a Bratwurstgipfel, which translates as a “sausage summit”! Beer, sausages, music & entertainment, good company and clear blue skies….who could ask for more.
Overall, it was a very worthwhile and enjoyable trip and we hope there will be other opportunities in the future for exchanges between the two towns.
